What a neighbor used to be

What a neighbor used to be

They used to be friendly, kind, helpful, and in general cared about the people that lived by them. So what has happened today? We don’t talk to each other. Sometimes we live next door to someone for years and don’t even know their name. We don’t care if they are struggling if they have problems in this life that we could help with. It is just easier to turn the other way and pretend that they don’t exist rather that help them out. Gone are the days that we cared truly cared about our neighbors? Instead of talking to them and trying to find out if we can help, we instead turn to the government to punish those we don’t understand or choose to ignore. Instead of offering our help we turn them in to the agency that can make their lives harder and more painful. So my problem is now I have a more difficult time teaching my children that this isn’t the right way to do things, that just because there is an ordiance. That we should turn our neighbor in for every little thing, just because we can. That the right thing to do is to return to the days of caring and taking care of each other. Before we had the government to regulate and take the place of human kind.
